Mississauga United FC joins the worldwide soccer community in mourning the passing of Franco Baresi, the legendary captain of AC Milan and the Italian National Team. Baresi was far more than one of the greatest defenders in history. He was a special figure to soccer fans everywhere—a symbol of loyalty, leadership, humility and excellence whose influence crossed generations, clubs and national borders.
At this time of profound sorrow, Mississauga United FC wishes to pay a special tribute to a man who meant so much to the entire soccer world and who also shared a meaningful connection with our club in recent years. His passing is deeply felt by our leadership and by the players, coaches, parents and supporters who understand what he represented to the beautiful game.
For our club, therefore, this loss carries a particularly personal meaning. Representatives of Mississauga United had the honour of meeting Baresi and speaking with him about a potential collaboration connected to soccer development. The discussions reflected a shared belief in the power of soccer to inspire young people and bring communities together. Unfortunately, the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted those plans before they could move forward.
Although the collaboration was never completed, we have never forgotten his kindness, openness and encouragement. The Mississauga United jersey bearing his autograph remains a treasured part of our club’s history and a lasting reminder of a memorable encounter with one of the greatest and most honourable figures in world soccer.
A Symbol of AC Milan
Franco Baresi’s name is inseparable from AC Milan. He joined the club’s first team as a teenager during the 1977–78 season and remained with the Rossoneri throughout his entire playing career. According to AC Milan, he played 20 seasons and made 719 official appearances for the club—an extraordinary record of excellence, commitment and loyalty.
During that remarkable career, Baresi helped AC Milan win six Serie A championships, three European Cups, two Intercontinental Cups and four Italian Super Cups. He captained the team for 15 seasons and became the defensive leader of the celebrated Milan sides coached by Arrigo Sacchi and Fabio Capello.
Those teams changed modern soccer. Their success was built not only on individual talent, but also on organization, collective responsibility, intelligence and trust. At the centre of it all stood Baresi. He read the game several steps ahead, organized the defensive line, anticipated danger and started attacks with calm, precise distribution. He proved that a defender could control a match through intelligence and positioning as much as through physical strength.
His influence was so great that AC Milan retired the No. 6 jersey after his playing career. Few honours express a player’s importance more clearly. For Milan supporters, No. 6 became more than a squad number. It became a symbol of leadership, loyalty and the standards expected of anyone fortunate enough to represent the club.
A Leader for Italy
Baresi’s legacy also belongs to the Italian National Team. He earned 81 international appearances and was a member of Italy’s 1982 FIFA World Cup-winning squad. He later became captain of the Azzurri and led his country to the 1994 World Cup final.
His performance during that tournament remains one of soccer’s great examples of determination. After undergoing knee surgery during the competition, Baresi returned in time for the final against Brazil and delivered an exceptional defensive performance over 120 minutes. Italy did not lift the trophy that day, but his courage, composure and commitment left an enduring impression on players and supporters around the world.
Great captains are not defined only by the trophies they raise. They are defined by how they respond to adversity, how they serve their teammates and how they carry responsibility in difficult moments. Baresi demonstrated those qualities throughout his career with both AC Milan and Italy.
An Example for Young Players in Mississauga
At Mississauga United FC, our responsibility extends beyond teaching players how to pass, defend or score. Youth soccer should also help children develop character, resilience, teamwork and respect. Franco Baresi’s life in football offers powerful lessons in every one of those areas.
He showed the value of loyalty by standing with AC Milan through both its greatest triumphs and its most difficult periods. He showed resilience by overcoming setbacks and returning from injury when his country needed him. He showed leadership through his actions, preparation and consistency rather than through personal attention. Above all, he showed that greatness and humility can exist together.
These are lessons that matter at every level of the game, including grassroots and competitive youth soccer in Mississauga. Most young players will never compete in a World Cup final or play at San Siro, but every player can learn to support teammates, accept responsibility, respond positively to challenges and represent a club with dignity.
Coaches can also learn from Baresi’s example. His command of space, timing and team organization demonstrates the importance of helping young players understand the game, not simply follow instructions. His career reminds us that soccer development includes decision-making, confidence, communication and character alongside technical ability.
Remembering His Support for Our Club
Meeting Franco Baresi was an unforgettable moment for Mississauga United. It connected a community-based Canadian youth soccer club with a man whose influence reached every corner of the football world. Despite his extraordinary achievements, he met our representatives with the grace and respect of a true gentleman.
We remain sincerely thankful for the time he shared with us and for his willingness to explore how his experience and influence might support soccer development. While circumstances beyond anyone’s control prevented that idea from becoming reality, the meeting itself continues to hold great meaning for our club.
The signed Mississauga United jersey now represents more than an autograph. It reminds us of an opportunity, a conversation and a shared love for the game. It also creates a responsibility: to pass the values embodied by Baresi to the next generation of players in our community.
